The Lotnicza Street Jewish Cemetery occupies an area of 11.5 ha. At the end of this page, there is a drawing of the whole area, including division into separate fields. This division, as well as rules concerning burials, size of graves and arrangement of particular fields were established by the Cemetery Board on the 15th January 1901.
Some of the major regulations:
- Every 20 rows of gravestones there should be a 2m wide path. On the bigger fields, this path should be 1m wider.
- Lateral paths (Querwege) should be 0.63 – 0.7m wide. An additional 31cm path should be added along gravestones.
- VIP tombs located along main paths (those of 2 and 3m width) should have a green space in front, and a 1m wide extra space behind the tomb.
- Graves located along 2 and 3m wide paths should have a depth of 2m.
- Graves of children who died before turning one year, should be 0.95m deep and 0.4m wide. Every 15 – 20 rows there should be a 1m wide path.
- In fields with graves of older children (above one year) such paths should be created every 15 -18 rows.
The number of burials on a particular field depends on the size of the graves, which in turn, depends on the age of the deceased. There were four main groups: children less than one year, between one and seven years old, children from seven to thirteen years old, and adults.
Only few changes were made subsequently. In 1926 the Synagogue Board determined the width, length and height of gravestones as well as specified materials that were permitted. At that time, gravestones made of black or very dark stone, were not allowed.
The first fields in use had the numbers 15 and 16. It should be noted that the order of assigning numbers to fields, does not reflect their chronological order:
- Individual fields were marked with Roman numerals: I, II, III etc.
- Larger fields were subdivided into smaller areas by adding 1 - 2m wide paths. A letter a, b, c etc, was added to its number.
- Graves within fields were assigned successive numbers from 1 to 100.
